The Larry Sanders show was on late-night television and has not been repeated for at least 10 years. A great pity. In the same division as Seinfeld as a quality comedy.
This early HBO production was a classy satire set behind the curtain on a late-night talk show, hosted by toothily neurotic Larry (show creator Garry Shandling).
Not only did it popularize spoof chat shows but it kick-started the vogue for celebrities queuing up to play exaggerated versions of themselves in the likes of Extras, Curb Your Enthusiasm and 30 Rock. Its lead writer Judd Apatow went on to become the king of Hollywood comedy.
