Ali is correct in saying that all religions must put their violence behind them. Christianity work towards that several centuries ago.
Ali is quite true in saying that the violence done in the name of Christianity is always dismissed as by cranks and kooks who represent nobody but themselves and deserve no sympathy from anybody. Her entire essay is well worth reading. It is ungated at least for readers in New Zealand when I looked at it.

They cannot have a reformation as the original documents were all burned deliberately.

Words are not enough.. Both Jesus and Mohammed lived in societies which had pre-existing religious texts, often exhorting violence. Both men must be understood by their actions as well as their words. Jesus, by his words and actions repudiated violence and urged forgiveness and help for his fellow man. Mohammed urged and required total obedience on threat of death or torture, and waged wars in pursuit of his requirements. The central teaching of Islam, the example of the life of Mohammed, is violent and cruel. The central teaching of Christianity, the life of Jesus, is peaceful and forgiving. To “reform” Islam would require removing the life and actions and many of the words of Mohammed. This is nonsense. Islam must be expunged or civilization will die.

If you are asserting Islam is satanic then I agree but that was not what the topic was. You cannot have a reformation if you do not have the texts to argue about.
