Via Matt Yglesias at Slate, working mothers in Nordic countries—Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland—actually have longer average working hours than single women.
This according to findings from “Taxation and Labor Supply of Married Women across Countries: A Macroeconomic Analysis,” a research paper by Alexander Bick at Arizona State University and Nicola Fuchs-Schundeln at Goethe University Frankfurt and CEPR.
Notably, these countries have strong paid leave policies (including strong incentives for men to take paid family leave), and an otherwise strong social safety net.
