A widely held belief of political theorists is the so called “median voter theorem”. This is where the policies carried out by the government are dictated by the Median,or middle, voter. This suggests that policies from the government should represent the average voter in that country. This theory is based on the game theoretical analysis in the Hotelling model (named after the creator of the model Howard Hotelling and is unrelated to any holiday resort accommodation). To understand this model, it is easiest to use the analogy of ice cream sellers on the beach (while slightly obscure, this is the tradition when it comes to the Hotelling model so bear with me).
