I came across this article reporting the results of this paper entitled The Gender Gap in Economics Enrollment: Where does it arise? which begins by reporting UCAS figures for my own intake year, 2013 but the paper itself analyses UCAS data from 2008.
The title immediately caught my interest because I had never explicitly noticed the existence of a gender gap on my course; in fact, I initially thought it might have been the males who were the source of this gap!
I’m sure you’re having a chuckle at my expense right now, but let me explain why I thought this way:
- I attended a convent, a Catholic girls’ secondary school, with a minority of lucky boys enrolled in our sixth form.
