I have data only back to 2005 so that will have to do. I have included the data suggest police were shot, stabbed, strangled or otherwise murdered. Using the same source, I show that just for police murdered by gunfire, 2014 is the third safest year since as recently as 2005.

When you include police murdered by means other than a firearm, 2014 is still only the third safest year since 2005.

When you look at police deaths by all causes, a surprisingly large number of officers die in car accidents and motorbike accidents or were run down by vehicles.
