One of the stars of Dad’s Army, who played Private Godfrey, wrote one of the most performed plays of the 20th century. He sold the rights for £200 in the 1920s.
When asked about this deal 50 years later when the play was still popular and performed by amateur and professional theatre companies around the world, he said he really needed the £200 back in the 1920s and the money came in handy at the time. He had financial difficulties at the time as a theatre producer.
