The decline in cinema attendance is much larger than the chart suggests because it is not adjusted for population growth.
As you can see in the admissions to cinema from 1935-2013 you can see overall the admissions number has decreased from it’s highest of 1,600 million in 1945 to it’s lowest of 70 million in 1980-1985. It has steadied off at approximately 200 million admissions. the spike may have been caused by the fact in 1940-1945 cinema was the only media that was aired and televisions were not really used or had due to expense. As the use of televisions increased the use of cinema and admissions started declining which led to the huge drop from the spike. It declined so much as companies went bust in 1980’s which led to the huge drop in admissions as can be seen and since the number has levelled off.
