As we head into festival season, Tunes Company thought it would be the perfect time to remember the granddaddy of them all: The Woodstock Music & Art Fair; better known, simply, as Woodstock. Max Yasgur’s 600-acre dairy farm was the site for the “gathering of the tribes” from August 15, 1969 to August 18, 1969. It was billed as “An Aquarian Exposition: 3 Days of Peace & Music” and it really was peaceful; plus it featured 32 classic musical acts on the bill.
Four million people were there. That’s my best guess from listening to those who said they were there over the years. Actual estimates put it at around a half-million fans.
Now, Max Yasgur is dead and the site is a quiet, beautiful, rural setting with a nearby museum. Woodstock was the last flicker of the roaring flame that was the sixties generation; a half-million rebellious, idealistic, hopeful…
