In 2013 out of 8874 male professional players, 3896 (44%) earned no prize money in the year; the figure for female professional players 2212 (45%) out of 4862. Just to reiterate – almost half of all professional players active in the year 2013 earned NO prize money at all

Roger Federer, the current World No. 2 in men’s tennis has earnings (just prize money, not counting endorsement deals and sponsorships) totaling over $92 million in a professional career that has spanned 17 years and shows no signs of slowing down. The amount is mind boggling in itself; even adjusted for inflation it is the highest of all time. It is unfathomable to think of a scenario where Federer walked on to a tennis court as a pro and did not make any money. Back in 1998, in the early days of his career, Federer was playing a satellite tennis tournament in the tiny town of Kublis in Switzerland where he was taking on compatriot Armando Brunold. It was a first round match that Federer evidently looked disinterested in and lost 7-6, 6-2.
