The chart below shows that New Zealand is far more flexible than Western Europe and is pretty near the USA in terms of people moving in and out of the unemployment pool every month with great ease. There are very high outflow rates from unemployment among the Anglo-Saxon and Nordic economies. The economies of Continental Europe stand in stark contrast. Unemployment outflow rates in these economies lie below 10% at a monthly frequency.

I was a big fan of the 96 page labour relations act of the Nationals that created this.

In 1999, the new Labour government immediately repealed Employment Contracts Act and replaced it with the Employment Relations Act.
When the national party returned to power in 2008, over the last two terms it slowly gutted the Employment Relations Act.
With the amendments just passed in the post-election session of Parliament, the Employment Relations act is the Employment Contracts Act all but in name.
