Interesting disjoin between rates of unmarried births and children living with unmarried mothers. 41 percent of births are unmarried yet only 24% of children live with an unmarried mother.Obviously many unmarried mothers go on to marry (though not necessarily the biological father). Note that the children living with an unmarried mother lines are relatively stable since 1980 yet the umarried births continues to climb. So that reflects the trend of having children first, and getting married second.
The big change happened between 1960 and 1980 the result of rising unemployment, feminism and welfare normalisation. My tuppence worth.

Well spotted. I did notice that particular trend of subsequent marriage, although we don’t know whether it’s to a father or to a stepfather
