The #MeToo movement is spawning considerable reflection in academia.  Here are some reflections and advice from a senior female scientist (moi) who came up through the academic system during the bad old days of the 1970’s and 1980’s, and who has mentored many young female scientists as they navigate the professional world of academia.

South Australia’s Mega-Battery a Costly Exercise in ‘Green’ Vanity Signalling

stopthesethings's avatarSTOP THESE THINGS

South Australians wake every day to an unfolding economic nightmare: they pay the highest retail power prices in the world, while suffering routine load shedding (scheduled power cuts) and mass blackouts (unscheduled), whenever wind power output collapses on a total and totally unpredictable basis. Businesses are being wiped out and whole industries are under threat.

A bit like one of Baldrick’s ‘cunning plans’, SA’s vapid Premier, Jay Weatherill signed up with Californian carpetbagger, Elon Musk to squander $150 million of taxpayers’ money on a battery which could notionally power SA for four minutes when the wind stops blowing.

Weatherill, who drifts from delusion to delusion, perpetuates the myth that the mega-battery, coupled with his diesel fuelled jet engines, will turn his beleaguered State into an economic superpower. Economics was never his strongest point.

Jobs require viable businesses, and viable businesses require reliable and affordable electricity supplies. Windmills and ludicrously expensive…

The Law of Demand in Action

Jon Murphy's avatarA Force for Good

On Monday, Virgina began imposing flexible tolls on the I-66 stretch between the Beltway and Washington, DC.  I-66 is one of the most congested roads in the nation during rush hour and the goal of these tolls was to have drivers look for alternative routes so that the interstate remained relatively free-flowing for those who needed to get into the city quicker.

Lo and behold, it worked:

Traffic moved smoothly throughout the morning, and WTOP’s traffic center reported that the number of drivers on I-66 declined compared to typical Monday morning volume.

“There were no delays inside the Beltway; that’s the point of congestion pricing — to keep the carpools and paying solo drivers moving. As demand goes up, the price does too,” said WTOP’s traffic reporter Dave Dildine.

VDOT reported that the average speed on I-66 during the morning rush hour was 57 mph, up from 37 mph…

Miranda Devine – Daily Telegraph – Sydney – has at Jacinda Ardern

Miranda Devine, writing in the Sydney Daily Telegraph

is not impressed by MS Ardern:-

NEW Zealand’s new Labour PM Jacinda Ardern has a hide. Her repeated offers to take some of the asylum seekers now causing trouble on Manus Island is just naive virtue-signalling.Ardern should know that her meddling runs the risk of putting what Indonesia calls the “sugar” back on the table for people smugglers.

The last time a Labor leader did that in Australia, 1200 people drowned at sea, and we are still dealing with the backlog of 50,000 unauthorised arrivals. The problems on Manus Island are the legacy of Kevin Rudd’s virtue signalling. We don’t need a Kiwi version of Rudd.

Already leaked intelligence reports from Australia reportedly show that four boatloads of asylum seekers were intercepted trying to reach New Zealand, citing the new Ardern government as a more “friendly” lure.

Ardern is sending a message to…
