As much as I dislike the Russian government – whether it was Stalin’s Soviet Union or Vladimir Putin’s autocratic kleptocracy – we owe the Russian people a debt of gratitude for doing most of the destruction of the Third Reich.
Yes, it’s true that if the Anglo-Americans had somehow been defeated in 1943, say, by losing the Battle of the Atlantic or losing big in Operation Avalanche, the USSR would have been defeated by Nazi Germany. Or, if not defeated outright, Stalin might have simply asked for a separate peace.
I know that the Western Allies’ Northwest Europe campaign was not a walkover, but it would have been bloodier than it was if the Russians had not faced the bulk of the Wehrmacht.
