Thomas Sowell on the Myths of Economic Inequality

Collective narcissism and identity politics: No empathy required.

leftinnewzealand's avatarLeft in New Zealand

I’m not writing this to gain favour with a certain political tribe, or to provoke people, although I’m sure there will be a range of reactions to this. I’m chiefly trying to make sense of all this craziness that continues in the west particularly on college campuses. This thought initially permeated into my brain while watching a video of the Evergreen College collective breakdown and the witch-hunt of Bret Weinstein (Professor of Evolutional Biology) in 2017. For those of you who haven’t heard about this, I’ve shared a video below to give an example of the type of antics that are occurring regularly on college campuses around the ‘anglosphere’. This episode is much like the psychotic Yale university ‘Halloween costume’ incident. I still find it difficult to understand such behaviour, as well as acknowledging that it’s disturbingly interesting. It also boggles my mind why education facilities and government entities continue…

Phil Twyford (remember?) is working on rent controls but maybe he should dump the idea

Bob Edlin's avatarPoint of Order

The Bay of Plenty Times in an article which revealed how taxpayers are bearing the brunt of Tauranga’s social housing crisis –  brought rental costs into the picture.

Among the data uncovered by the newspaper, three community housing providers have been paid almost $17m towards income-related rent subsidies in the last two financial years . These subsidies are the difference between market rents and the amount paid by a tenant in income-related rent.

Four transitional housing providers which provided warm, dry and safe short-term accommodation received about $2.3m over the same timeframe and $1m was spent on emergency housing special needs grants including motels, $624,000 of this mainly to motels in Tauranga from October 2018 to December 2018.

Steve Pinker recommends five science books

whyevolutionistrue's avatarWhy Evolution Is True

The A.V. Club put up this video last year of Steve Pinker recommending five science/psychology books that he particularly enjoyed or recommends:

One Two Three Infinity. . . Facts and Speculations of Science by George Gamow

The Selfish Gene, The Blind Watchmaker by Richard Dawkins

The Big Picture by Sean Carroll

The Beginning of Infinity: Explanations that Transform the World by David Deutsch

How the Mind Works by Pinker Himself

I’ve read all of them save the two by Gamow and Deutsch, and share his enthusiasm for the ones I know. I’ve often given my own recommendations, some of which coincide with Steve’s, and hence needn’t put them here. But readers should feel free to recommend their favorite science books, particularly ones that came out recently.

It has not escaped my attention that my own book escaped Pinker’s attention. But really, it doesn’t belong on a list of books…

Catholic Emancipation as a Constitutional Revolution

Mark Koyama's avatarNotes On Liberty

Religious toleration is important to Britain’s historical self-image as a bastion of liberty against continental tyrants like Hitler, Napoleon, and Louis XIV.

But for much of the 18th century, Catholics in Britain were barred from government service, the army and navy, the law, and the universities. Formally, they were not allowed to inherit land or even marry with Catholic rites (though in practice there were well-recognized workarounds). Catholic priests faced life imprisonment and Catholic schools were illegal. When these laws were liberalized in 1778, this provoked the worst riot in early…

Monitoring Digital Election Campaigns: Remembering Gordon Tullock

Amol Agrawal's avatarMostly Economics

EPW edit points to the challenges of monitoring digital elections.

The campaigning for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections has been perhaps the most “digital” so far with parties across the spectrum now using, and often abusing, the digital tools available to them such as social media, mobile apps, online discussion forums, and mass messaging.

Last week, social media platforms came together with the Internet and Mobile Association of India to release a “Voluntary Code of Ethics” in consultation with the Election Commission of India (ECI). Through this, Facebook, Google, Twitter and others will monitor and take action against election-related paid advertisements that violate the ECI guidelines. This code claims to ensure that there is no misuse of the platforms that can “vitiate the free and fair character” of the electoral process.

Over the last decade, social media has developed from being a networking tool to becoming an important mode…
